Aircraft Trajectory Planning: from Strategic to Emergency

Prof. Daniel Delahaye

ENAC — French Civil Aviation University, Toulouse, France

Prof. Daniel Delahaye heads the Optimization and Machine Learning Team at ENAC — the French Civil Aviation University — and directs the AI4DECARBO research program at the ANITI AI institute in Toulouse. He holds a PhD in automatic control from ISAE-SUPAERO (1995) and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics under Prof. Amedeo Odoni. His research applies mathematical optimization and AI to airspace design and trajectory planning, with ongoing collaborations at MIT, Georgia Tech, and NASA.

About this Talk

This talk surveys optimization methods for aircraft trajectory planning, with a particular focus on functional-space approaches. Starting from dimension-reduction techniques, it covers front-propagation algorithms and random-sampling methods, showing how coupling optimization with simulation-based evaluation unlocks real-world performance. Several Air Traffic Management applications are then presented, including European traffic optimization via selective simulated annealing, alternative route generation for weather and contrail avoidance, emergency trajectory design, and automated SID/STAR design for the Paris TMA.
